Worm - Gloomlord [REVIEW]

Image
Worm is a Floridian two-piece that has been active since 2012. Here we have the band's second full-length; the first having been preceded by a couple of demos. It sounds exactly as it should do, based on the cover art - strange and wonderful. More specifically - it is dirty, swampy, eerie, psychedelic blackened funeral death-doom. And yes, that is an interesting combination of styles; unique isn't a word to be taken lightly, but it might actually be appropriate in this case. Brought to us by Iron Bonehead, Gloomlord sadly isn't getting a CD release; but it is available on vinyl, cassette and digital formats here . The atmospheric, immersive offering can also be heard in full below. *edit* July 2020 has seen CD pressings, from  Iron Bonehead and Headsplit .

Leviathan ‎– Verräter [From the Vaults]

Image
Leviathan has only appeared on this blog  once before . Here we have another of the project's somewhat peripheral offerings. Verräter (Tumult, 2002) is a double CD of early demo material (which Profound Lore has also recently reissued on vinyl). It is worth taking a moment to appreciate the artwork by Zdzisław Beksiński. Absolutely glorious. The music here is also pretty glorious. Raw, atmospheric depressive black metal at its finest. Even if you aren't normally a fan of Leviathan, you should give this compilation a try. ...and if you're new to Leviathan, there is arguably no better place to start.

Interview - FROZEN SOUL

Image
For an introduction to Frozen Soul, see here . This interview is with guitarist Michael Munday. 1. Encased In Ice is an exceptional demo, how has the response been so far? The response has been incredible. We didn’t think that Encased In Ice would get this much attention and praise, it’s very humbling to see.  2. How did the relationship with Maggot Stomp come about? I was already a fan of what Maggot Stomp was releasing, and I had interacted a bit on their social media. Shortly after we recorded the demo I just said “f*ck it” and DM’d a dropbox link to our songs, and Maggot Stomp loved it. We’ve had a great relationship since then. 3. Do you have a new release/new releases in the pipeline? What can we expect from the new material, as compared with the EP or in general? We’ll be releasing a full length LP this year. The new songs we have are even groovier and heavier than what we’ve already released. Expect to hear some punishing death metal.  4. It’s a clichéd que

Interview - SANGUISUGABOGG

Image
If you don't already know Sanguisugabogg, see here first. The band's guitarist, Cameron Boggs, kindly answered these questions. 1. Pornographic Seizures is an exceptional demo, how has the response been so far? The response has been pretty nuts, and good. It’s really weird to see where a four song demo has taken us already but I can’t complain. Really excited for what’s coming up, and to have some fun.  2. How did the relationship with Maggot Stomp come about? I was drunk on Instagram messaging Scott about tacos or something, and I slipped a Dropbox link with our demos to him out of the blue. He liked it a lot, so now he’s our best bud/dad/label daddy.  3. You have just announced that you're about to start recording your debut album, what can we expect from that (as compared with the EP or in general)? It has some crazier riffing. It’s heavier than fuck, and heavier than the EP, but I’d say musically it’s stepped up a level and I’m really excited about

Dark Fortress - Profane Genocidal Creations [From the Vaults]

Image
A recent post about this album's predecessor can be found  here . The second Dark Fortress full-length was, like the band's debut, originally released on Red Stream (in 2003). ...and it was also reissued by Century Media in 2017; along with a couple of bonus cover versions. A similar affair here in general really - Profane Genocidal Creations is another enjoyable ride. Melodic thrashy black metal, with some new-wave-of-British-heavy-metal influences. If you enjoyed the debut then the sophomore effort is worth picking up too. You can preview one track below, and buy it here .
