Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon [Old School Death Metal Classics]

Image
Any fans of Bolt Thrower  who aren't familiar with this album should rectify that. Aside from the musical similarities, it features Dave Ingram - who went on to sing for Bolt Thrower from 1998 until 2004. It also features Frank Healy, who now plays with former members of both Benediction and Bolt Thrower in  Memoriam . Released in 1993 by Nuclear Blast, Transcend the Rubicon is the British band's third full-length; and their finest hour. The Dan Seagrave artwork tops off the package perfectly, too. You can hear the album below, and pick up a copy here .

Interview - SOULSKINNER

Image
If you aren't familar with Soulskinner, see  here . This interview is with Bill Zobolas (guitarist and songwriter). 1. Descent to Abaddon was one of the best death albums of 2017, how has the response been? The response has been really great. The reviews and the messages we have received from fans have been excellent, and that gives us great strength. It means a lot to us that people are responding well to our musical vision, and this is something that we have seen more and more with every release. 2. Crypts of Ancient Wisdom was also a great album, did you feel a lot of pressure going into the new one with the bar set so high? The truth is that each of our releases is better than the previous one. This is because we mature as musicians, but it also happens because we have not pressured ourselves on any album. As the main composer of the band, I write music to indulge my own tastes, and this is why I do not feel pressure. The composition of the music is for me somethin...

Underrated Old School Death Metal - THROMBUS

Image
Thrombus is an Oregon band which only ever produced one recording. Active between 1991 and 1996, they self-released Mental Turmoil on cassette in 1993. La Caverna has now reissued the EP/mini-album, which features six tracks and clocks in at around 24 minutes. Old school death metal has seen a big resurgence in recent years, and this is a very solid example of the genre. Raw and heavy, with thrash influences and some doomy moments; it's a highly enjoyable listen. One for fans of early  Autopsy , Demigod , Benediction ,  Unleashed ... 1914 - The Blind Leading The Blind [REVIEW]

Image
1914 is a WWI-themed band from Ukraine, that formed in 2014 - on the hundredth anniversary of the start of the war. The Blind Leading The Blind is a compelling hour-long blackened, sludgy, doom-laden death metal journey. The songwriting is extremely strong, as is the execution; and the release is laced with some highly effective samples. It drops 11th November; or more specifically, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month (Central European Time) - the hundredth anniversary of the end of the war. A track from the album, which features a guest performance from David Ingram (of  Benediction  and  Bolt Thrower  fame), can be heard below. ...and it can be pre-ordered now, from  Redefining Darkness  (America) or  Archaic  (Europe).

A track from which can be found below: On 23rd March 2018, almost exactly a year later, they are releasing a second album - 'The Silent Vigil'. A teaser track from that was uploaded earlier today: You can buy 'For the Fallen', and/or pre-order 'The Silent Vigil',  here .
