Vltimas ‎– Something Wicked Marches In [REVIEW]

Image
This is the first release from a blackened death metal supergroup. The project features David Vincent (of Morbid Angel fame), along with Rune Eriksen (ex-Mayhem) and Florent Mounier (Cryptopsy). Vltimas very much feels like a 'real' band, however, perhaps a result of them having written the bulk of the album together in person (in spite of being geographically dispersed). It also sounds as though there will be more from these guys in the future, as opposed to this simply being a one-off release. Delivered to us by Season Of Mist, Something Wicked Marches In is a short album - clocking in at under forty minutes. Its brevity works to its advantage, though - there's a lot to like here, and nothing much not to like. Powerful vocals, sublime riffs, superb drumming... plenty to keep you coming back for more. You can hear this impressive debut below, and pick up a copy  here .

2017/18 Albums We Missed

Image
Eight albums, from eight bands that haven't been featured before. Abstracter ( US ) -  Cinereous Incarnate  ( Vendetta/Sentient Ruin/I Voidhanger, 2018 ) Blackened sludgy death-doom. Their 2016 split with Dark Circles is also recommended. Blasphemer ( UK ) - Blasphemer  ( Canometal, 2017 ) Debut album from this lesser-known old school-style death metal band. 2018 has seen the release of another. Faustcoven ( Norway ) -  In The Shadow Of Doom  ( Nuclear War Now!, 2018 ) Fourth full-length from this seventeen-year-old solo project. Black metal with stoner/doom influences. Gaerea  ( Portugal ) -  Unsettling Whispers  ( Transcending Obscurity, 2018 ) Debut album, from a black metal band which previously released an EP on Everlasting Spew. Hints of Behemoth. Innumerable Forms  ( US ) - Punishment in Flesh ( Profound Lore, 2018 ) Another debut, this time of the sludgy death-doom variety. Originally a one man band, there is now a full line-up. N

More Recommended Metal YouTubers

Part one is here . Five more recommendations are below. The Rageaholic - His Metal Mythos series, running for seven years now, is pure gold. It tends to focus on classic and black metal bands. Whether you share his tastes/opinions or not, nobody could deny that he is both articulate and entertaining. The Dark Path - Only six months on the clock, but you would never be able to tell that from watching Matt - his delivery is beyond solid. Extremely watchable stuff. He mostly covers extreme metal, but has quite eclectic tastes. Full Metal Ginger  - Kevin has three years of making videos under his belt. He's very likeable, and humble; and also pretty funny. Another for those who enjoy extreme metal, many enjoyable hours of viewing to be had here. Marc G With A C  - A fairly new channel, from a British guy that has been involved with the scene for a long time. Mainly content about death and thrash metal, but some more traditional metal as well. Well worth checking. Rob D

Burial - Relinquished Souls [Underrated Old School Death Metal]

Image
Relinquished Souls is this Dutch band's only full-length. Recorded in 1993, it has more of a Floridian sound than a European one. Hints of Death , Massacre, Morbid Angel, Pestilence and Obituary ; to name a few. Originally released by West Virginia Records (a German label, somewhat confusingly); versions have since come from Memento Mori and VIC Records. Now Redefining Darkness and Raw Skull Recordz have teamed up to bring us new CD and vinyl reissues. A lot more people should know about Burial, if you are unfamiliar then you should rectify that. The album can be heard below, and pre-ordered  here .
